Spring has arrived, and we’re here to help you kick off your boating season smoothly with our Pre-Launch Checklist! Here’s everything you need to prepare before setting sail:
1. Boat Registration
- Verify that your boat license or registration documents are valid and onboard before launch.
2. Safety Equipment
- Refer to the Safe Boating Guide to ensure all required safety equipment is present.
- Check expiration dates on flares and fire extinguishers.
3. Life Jackets
- Ensure you have properly sized, wearable life jackets for each passenger.
- Inspect for mildew, rot, tears, or damage to straps and seams. Replace any damaged items.
4. Required Documents
- For boats with engines of 10 HP or greater, ensure you have:
- A Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card.
- Government-issued photo ID.
- For boats with a VHF radio, carry the Restricted Operator Certificate – Maritime.
- Check regional regulations for any additional requirements, such as a Harbour License.
5. First-Aid Kit
- Restock supplies that were used last season or have expired.
6. Fittings
- Inspect thru-hull fittings below the waterline for tightness.
- Ensure sea valves operate freely.
- Confirm the boat plug is in good condition and properly installed before launch.
7. Winter Damage
- Examine non-metallic thru-hulls for brittleness or cracks caused by winter ice.
- Inspect hoses for signs of freezing, splitting, or loosening.
8. Fuel System
- Check fuel fittings and hoses for cracks or stress and replace if necessary.
9. Electronic Gear
- Install fresh batteries in portable devices such as radios, GPS, and flashlights.
- Inspect wiring for lights, the horn, and other onboard equipment.
10. Dock and Anchor Lines
- Check for chafing or wear, and replace worn lines.
11. Boat Trailer
- Inspect trailer tires for wear and ensure they are properly inflated.
- Examine the trailer frame for rust and inspect wheel bearings, repacking if needed.
- Test trailer lights to ensure they function before towing.
